Production Notes

The time taken to coordinate and communicate about a task is sometimes disproportionately more than the time taken to complete the task itself. Even during the production of a journal article or a book, there may be several administrative and coordination tasks that arise that must be handled alongside the actual article itself. Most of this communication is done via emails and may involve a lot of back and forth. Trying to collate all this information in a sequential, chronological, easy to access order is a mammoth task in itself.

Realizing the need to have a better solution to track such overhead and administrative tasks, we introduced the Production Notes functionality within Kriya, where all the communication about that content is stored and can be retrieved at any point. This functionality enables the user to -

  • Add notes directly on the Job Card. You can use this to leave instructions about the content to others. In case there are unanswered notes, it is highlighted to the user.

  • See what emails have been sent by Kriya and to whom.

  • See the entire workflow history including who signed off the content, when and who it was signed off to.

The Production Notes feature has helped the publishing and production teams to sync well. It also serves as a record of the activity history.

The Production Notes can be easily accessed through the icon on the Job Card interface as shown below. Screenshots have been included here for easy reference.

Access through Job Card interface.

Leave notes under the Notes section. Unanswered notes will be highlighted on the Production Notes icon on Job Card.

Markup UK

Markup UK is a conference for anyone interested in challenges, solutions, and recent developments in the use of XML and other markup technologies. This year’s meeting at Kings College, London had a stated mission of Beyond the Bricks to look at applying the excellent markup technologies already built to streamline production and build creative applications.  We believe strongly in XML and other markup technologies which help to add structure and enrich content at every stage in the publishing process. This conference is unique in that it provides a collaborative platform for professionals to present their theories, experiments and findings and collectively identify applications to the many challenges faced in publishing and other domains. We welcomed the opportunity to be one of the sponsors of this year’s conference.

There were several interesting papers presented on markup techniques, implementations and new developments in the field. Some of the papers I found particularly interesting were Subcheck, a mechanism to validate XML and Dispelling Myths About Markup Formats, a talk that cleared the air on XML and other markup technologies and how to choose the right markup format for your needs. The standout though was a work of genius,  <Angle-brackets/> on the Branch Line, a way to model railway engineering with XML technologies by John Lumley.

While this conference was attended primarily by experienced XML practitioners, they had a pre-conference aimed at educating publishing professionals on the different technologies with workshops to get down to the nuts and bolts. I highly recommend attending this conference to develop a better understanding and appreciation of markup as we proceed on our journey to deliver Happy Authors.
