Kriya Kaleidoscope

May 2019 | Issue 5
In this issue of Kriya Kaleidoscope, we look at the need for curation in a world burgeoning with content. This one is from our archives and is as relevant today as it was when originally written (or perhaps more so). We are also glad to unveil a smart tool we have been working on for automation of package creation for hosting - the Kriya Packager! As always, we look forward to your inputs and questions. Meanwhile, Exeter associates have been stretching themselves - literally - as part of a daily 5-minute exercise routine set to peppy music and lively instructions. Live Well @ Exeter! We hope you enjoy reading this issue. Click here for recent issues.

The Need for Curation
By Ravi Venkataramani

An excerpt -

“Are we destined for a world of disinformation? The scholarly publishing world would certainly disagree. It has distinguished itself by continuing to maintain editorial integrity and prides itself on its ability to present the true picture. How does it continue to do so in this changing world? The answer is curation. Digital curation is the process of actively managing research data throughout its life cycle – this involves maintaining, preserving and adding value to it. Curation enables long-term repositories to be maintained, helps avoid duplication of effort in research data generation and makes it available to all stakeholders for taking research efforts forward.”

Introducing Kriya Packager

Finalised manuscripts and/or publication-ready content needs to be submitted to multiple online third-party entities - primarily, hosting platforms such as HighWire, Atypon, Silverchair etc. and content aggregators like PubMed, CrossRef, Thomson, Ovid, etc. This is inherently fraught with challenges due to lack of an underlying standard across the entities. Each entity has differing rule sets leading to repetitive effort (largely manual) per destination entity for same article/journal.

To alleviate these challenges, Exeter has developed Kriya Packager, a solution for automation of online package creation for articles and journals.  The solution capability and benefits are outlined in the diagram below.

We believe this solution benefits all stakeholders - publishers, third-party entities and service providers.

Live Well @ Exeter

Come mid-day, Exeter associates get off their chairs for the daily 5-minute Power Break. As peppy music and the voice of a lively instructor fills the air, they go through a set of light stretches and breathing exercises. Incorporating a mild workout as part of the workplace routine is an initiative as part of our overall employee well-being efforts. The benefits are well-known - it alleviates back and leg issues that come from long hours of sitting, relieves stress and improves overall productivity. Besides, it’s fun!

Join us at JATS-Con 2019 and SSP 2019
